Kumana
Kumana National Park
A Peaceful Escape for Wildlife and Bird Photography
Kumana National Park, once called Yala East, is a 357 sq. km stretch of wild beauty located on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast. Unlike its busy neighbor Yala, Kumana offers a more peaceful and less crowded safari experience — even during the high season. It’s a perfect destination for those looking to explore nature quietly and capture authentic wildlife moments through the lens.
Wildlife in Kumana
While animal numbers may be lower compared to other parks, wildlife sightings are still rewarding — and without the crowds. Visitors have the chance to see:
- Leopards
- Elephants
- Crocodiles and turtles
- Wild buffalo
- Sloth Bear
The wide open landscapes, natural waterholes, and forested paths create great photography settings with soft natural light and dramatic backdrops.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Kumana’s real treasure is its birdlife. The park is home to the Kumana Bird Reserve, a 200-hectare mangrove swamp that bursts to life during the nesting season (May to June). Even outside this season, it’s a hotspot for bird photography.
Photographers and birdwatchers can spot:
- Black-necked stork (very rare)
- Painted storks
- Malabar pied hornbills
- Green bee-eaters
- Orioles, darters, herons, and many more
Even beginners can expect to see around 50 bird species on a single outing. Watchtowers around the park offer amazing vantage points for photography and observation.
